What I want from Nintendo NX: An "H"-onest Opinion

Nintendo has been a staple for gaming throughout my entire life. I've owned every one of their home consoles aside from Gamecube, and I have always played their big name titles. The Nintendo NX (which is still a codename) arrives in March 2017, and there are a few things I'll be looking for before I choose to sink my money and my hopes into this new console...or whatever it is.

The first thing I want before I even get into the specifics is just some actual knowledge on the system. Why is it such a mystery Nintendo? You've already been outspoken and said "it will not replace the Wii U or 3DS". At this point, you don't have enough credibility with me to generate hype behind your mystery product, more like doubt. Be forthcoming with your product so I know if its a gimmick or a real console. Your gimmicks have caught up with you at this point which is why you're on life support in the eyes of gamers. Yes, I know you have a lot of money, but the well eventually run dry if your sales reflect what happened with the Wii U. It drives me crazy when die-hard Nintendo fans justify the Wii because of its gargantuan sales numbers. If you ask me, the Wii was the worst home console ever made. It wasn't HD compatible in a time where HD televisions were becoming commonplace, the motion controls were the primary focus and they weren't even that crisp, and the list of Wii games must really be long once you get to the M's because Mario evidently gets a game every time he does something. Mario at the Olympics, Mario Party 9, Mario Super Sluggers, Mario Hopscotch, Mario Makes Dinner, Mario Watches TV, Mario Takes a $%!#, alright I got a little carried away there. This wasn't meant to be a Nintendo smash piece, so let me get back to the NX and my positive hopes for it.

I think that Nintendo at its core has a great list of exclusive games. I wasn't trying to say earlier that the Mario franchise is bad, its just that he doesn't have to be in every single game you make. Mario, Zelda, Metroid, F Zero X, Star Fox and all of the rest are a great foundation and the games are timeless. Even though the Wii U performed terribly in sales, you still had great innovation and created an addictive and fun new franchise - Splatoon. Between Splatoon and Mario Kart 8, I've gotten enough time with the Wii U to at least be able to sleep at night with the purchase of that console. I also think the Wii U was a step in the right direction. At the time, they developed a console that was more powerful than the ones currently on the market (Xbox 360 and Playstation 3) and had games like Call of Duty developing for it, but they failed to see into the future - which is something I'll address shortly. It seemed that on the surface, players would have a Nintendo console that had both exclusives and third party support - eliminating the need for another console, which is what a home console should be. The only reason to buy a different console would be if you wanted to play the exclusives on it. Unfortunately, the Wii U ended up being nothing more than a supplemental device used only for its exclusives, leaving it to gather dust while I played all of the multi-platform games on my PS4 and now currently playing on PC. So here's a list of what I want from Nintendo.

I want the NX to be something that can be considered a "primary" console again, not just a toy to play with when you're bored of your other ones. I want the NX to continue developing the games that I've grown up with, but I also want it to have long lasting third party support. I want a powerful console that can compete with whatever mid-generation consoles that are coming out from Sony and Microsoft. Its not enough to only be stronger than the PS4 and Xbox One anymore, you have to anticipate future needs. When I spoke with Jay (@LetsGetJay), he said to me, "Nintendo doesn't want to show NX at E3 because they want to see what Sony and Microsoft are doing". Seriously? Are you that scared Nintendo!? Is something in the back of your mind telling you that the Nvidia GPU in your NX from 2012 isn't going to be strong enough to compete with the Virtual Reality, 4K ready consoles coming from the competition? But I digress. In addition to those wants, I wouldn't mind portability if its done well. If I'm able to bring the portable version to a friend's house and game with them on their home console NX, that would be pretty cool. This way, I won't have to bring the console, all the cords, move the TV, etc. Alright let's wrap this up.

Overall, I want Nintendo to be a powerful, primary console thats expensive. Yes, I said I want the console to be expensive. Don't charge me $199 for garbage. Charge me $499 and give me something with some meat on it's bones. I love the exclusives, so keep those coming and please make a sequel to Splatoon. Make me and everyone else a believer in Nintendo by showing us that you can make something more than just a supplemental console. Lastly, I want some information if nothing else. How is the console less than a year away and nobody can do anything but speculate?

Oh and keep Amiibos too, they look great on my desk at work. Seriously...not sarcasm.

Until next time guys, thanks for killing time with me.
